The class action lawsuit claims that its voice activated Siri assistant has violated users’ privacy. A preliminary settlement was filed in Oakland, California federal court Tuesday night. Mobile device users had complained that Apple recorded their private conversations on a daily basis. Users say that the company gave such conversations to third parties like advertising companies etc. so that advertisements can be delivered to the users based on them.
According to media reports, the 5-year-old lawsuit is going to be resolved soon with the proposed settlement filed in the federal court in Oakland, California. Apple is accused of recording conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with virtual assistant Siri for more than a decade, for which it secretly activated Siri. It is claimed that the alleged recordings took place even when people did not try to activate the virtual assistant with the trigger words, ‘Hey Siri’.
However, Apple is not admitting any wrongdoing in the agreement. The agreement still has to be approved by US District Judge Jeffrey White. Attorneys in the case have proposed scheduling a court hearing for Feb. 14 in Oakland to review the conditions. If the settlement is approved, millions of customers who owned iPhones and other Apple devices between September 17, 2014 and the end of last year could file claims.
