spacedotcom’s Report According to , the asteroid named 2024 UQ was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in Hawaii on October 22. It is a network of four telescopes. However, just 2 hours after it was discovered, the asteroid burned up over the Pacific Ocean near California.
The difference of just 2 hours between the detection of the asteroid and its entry into the Earth’s atmosphere is a matter of concern. If it had been a big asteroid, there could have been loss of life and property. It is difficult to alert people and make relief preparations in such a short time.
The European Space Agency (ESA) says that this was the third such asteroid discovered this year, which was detected some time ago. Earlier in September, an asteroid named 2024 RW1 had exploded over the Philippines. And in January, an asteroid named 2024 BX1 exploded in the sky of Germany.
What is Asteroids?
According to NASA, these are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, similarly asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Scientists have so far detected 11 lakh 13 thousand 527 asteroids.
